Petworth West Sussex antiques capital of the south

Petworth in West Sussex has become the destination town in the UK for antique buyers looking for more than just traditional brown furniture. On the edge of the town stands a vast late 17th-century mansion set in a sprawling verdant park, landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and immortalised in Turner's paintings. The house features fascinating servants quarters with a state of the art Victorian kitchen. The house is synonymous with the name Grinling Gibbons 17thc Dutch carver to Charles 1 known as the Kings carver.

"The majestic 700-acre park is internationally important as one of the finest unspoilt examples of an English landscape park designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. It is also home to the largest and oldest herd of fallow deer in England. The ancient records of Petworth reveal many centuries of land tenure, even mentioning William, 8th Baron de Percy (1193-1245), in connection with the 'new small park in which is his cunegeria' (rabbit warren).'Capability' Brown worked at Petworth for the 2nd Earl of Egremont from 1751 to 1764. His greatest achievement was said to be the serpentine lake, created by damming a series of small ponds. The lake is still fed by a mile of 18th-century underground brick culverts which tap the springs at the base of the western hills in the park. " go to www.augustus-brandt-antiques.co.uk

French architecture

Balance and symmetry are the ruling characteristics of this formal style. Homes are often brick with detailing in copper or slate. Windows and chimneys are symmetrical and perfectly balanced, at least in original versions of the style. Defining features include a steep, high, hip roof; balcony and porch balustrades; rectangle doors set in arched openings; and double French windows with shutters. Second-story windows usually have a curved head that breaks through the cornice. The design had its origins in the style of rural manor homes, or chateaus, built by the French nobles during the reign of Louis XIV in the mid-1600s. The French Provincial design was a popular Revival style in the 1920s and again in the 1960s.
